Here's an old Mindanao map attached to a book written by Jesuit priest published in 1894 and found in a library in Oxford by a Jesuit priest a hundred years ago (Fr. Albert Alejo a.k.a Paring Bert) --- in 1994.
Note that reddish portion in the island means the islands gold rich areas. As observed, Northern Mindanao where Cagayan de Oro is located has vast reserves of gold. You might not know but the "Oro" in Cagayan de Oro is a spanish word for Gold.
