ON THE NEWS: Oro’s Corpus Christi settles for runner-up

CORPUS Christi’s SBP team made a gallant stand, making it to the finals in the Mindanao regional elimination of the Milo-sponsored 2012 BEST (Basketball Efficiency Scientific Training) Center Small Basketeers of the Philippines-Pasarelle twin tournament.
Against the home squad Ateneo de Davao University, the Corpus Christi’s small basketeers, however, lost steam in their grueling fight to the end that was decided only by five points, 64-59 at the Goldstar Gym in Davao City over the weekend.

“Sayang, it was anybody’s game though una lang sila naka-inat sa ato,” said Andy Calingin who called the shots for the CCS Knights in the company of Bobax Echalico and Carlo Dagalea.
Holy Child College of Davao defeated Claret School of Zamboanga City, 64-53 to claim the pasarelle title.
Lawrence Angeles scored 11 of his team-high 13 points in the first quarter to lead Ateneo to an early 20-5 lead in the SBP tournament for 9-11 years old.
Corpus Christi then relied on the second quarter rally led by point guard Joel Cagulangan to cut Ateneo's lead down to eight, 29-21, and remain within striking distance in the third period. Eric Tuadles and Joachim Weill, however, conspired for nine points in the final quarter to secure the victory for the Blue Knights.
Eric Tuadles finished with 11 points and Weill added 10 for Ateneo.
Corpus Christi was paced by Jose Sabandal who had 18 points in the game. Cagulangan added 12.
In the battle for third place, Claret School of Zamboanga City won over Dadiangas West, 50-43.
In the Passarelle tournament for 12-14 years old, Vincent Angelo Fernandez netted 13 points and Carlito Rodriguez and Leon Lorenzana scored eight points apiece to lead the Reds.
Claret, on the other hand, was led by Earl Barredo who scored a game-high 19 points.
Holy Trinity College routed Sacred Heart of Jesus Montessori, 76-62, to claim third place.
Holy Trinity and Dadiangas West, meanwhile, went home with the Sportsmaship awards.
The Mindanao leg championship was graced by BEST Center founder Nic Jorge, Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas Mindanao head Pedro Alfaro Jr. and SBP regional director for Mindanao Boy Cua.
The Luzon championship leg of Asia’s first scientific school of basketball is slated on November 2-5 in Pampanga and the Visayas championship leg is set on November 16-19 in Iloilo City.
The 2012 SBP-Passerelle National Finals will be held from November 30 to December 2 in Roxas City. (With reports from Lito delos Reyes)
