SOME people join a rotary club for business and connection, but most stay for the opportunity to be involved in community service.
In Rotary Club of West Cagayan de Oro (Rcwest), work, play and service seem inseparable at all.
In its 13th year of sponsoring and leading the Oro Open Golf Tournament, Rcwest once again showed why it envisioned being the premier Rotary Club and proactive in the delivery of excellent service. Not only has it encouraged most Rotarians and friends of rotary to play golf and maintain camaraderie but also to construct a school-building.
“The proceeds of this tournament will help us fund our 3rd two-classroom school building in as many years,” said Architect Hipolito “Lito” Busgano, the president of the club.
“Our club believed in our role as agents of development thru big-time literacy programs, hence, aside from providing scholarships, donating books and career orientation, we decided that constructing a school building will pave a way for the opportunity for the pupils to be housed in a decent and comfortable classrooms,” Mr. Busgano added.
Thirteen years, with the brilliant inception of Club Past President Rolly Uy and then Club President Demosthenes “Boy” Du, a project that rolls playing, working and serving the community is merged.
The 13th installment held last October 26 to 28 at the Pueblo de Oro Golf and Country Club netted at least 200 players from Cagayan de Oro, Ozamiz, Oroquieta, Dipolog, Iligan, Butuan and from the provinces of Misamis Oriental, Bukidnon, Lanao del Norte and del Sur.
“This also marks the third straight year that the club is working with Congressman Rufus Rodriguez of the second district of Cagayan de Oro City in building the ‘above-par classroom buildings,” said Golf Tournament Chair and past president Roger Uy. “We said above-par because we make sure we exceed the specifications set forth by Department of Education.”
Although no one from the golfers hit any of the three hole in one in the three-day event, an HP high-end laptop sponsored by Global Chips Technologies Co. was instead included as a major raffle prize during the awarding ceremony held last October 28 at the Pueblo Club House.
The awarding and recognition night was hosted by past president Noel Nalzaro and club director Erna Maagad.
They also invited a performing band to enliven the capacity crowd waiting to be awed by the prizes and cheer for the winners.
Incoming President Rommel Esguerra prepared various prizes ranging from appliances to tech products which were raffled off between the awarding of the tournament winners from ladies division and men’s division categorized in classes A, B, C and D.

Club Past President and Pueblo Golf Tournament Chair Edu Alaba quipped that every year, more participants are joining as prizes are getting bigger and more attractive.
What the golfers realized is that the objective of their participation was not only to enjoy, have fun, connect with old friends and buddies but to help realize the dream of Rcwest to promote a sustainable literacy program.
Another past president, Engr. Ferdinand “Edong” Espiritu, said part of the proceeds will be to build the club’s 5th and 6th ferrous cement tank that can house 10,000 liters.
“Imagine the discomfort of having a new classroom in hinterland barangays with no available water. The tanks answer this concern,” Engr. Espiritu said.
He added that the club also provides chairs, tables, and blackboards.
Since the students need to be connected from the outside world, Rotarian William Malagar of Global Chips also donated a computer set, printer and internet connection. After all, the literacy project should be complete and universal in approach.

The first school building was realized thru the leadership of past president Armando “Mandy” Tarayao (Barangay Balubal) and the second classroom building was during the term of past president Almarco “Al” Brito (Sitio Linangohan, Brgy. Tablon).
