Supermarkets to start imposing P1 per plastic bags today



After the local government has signed the Memorandum of Agreement together with the private companies encompassing the strict implementation of minimizing the use of plastic bags in the city has now taken actions as big supermarkets in the city will now impose P1 per plastic bags.




STARTING today, major supermarkets in the city will start collecting a pass-through charge of P1 to customers who will be requesting for plastic bags.
City Councilor President Elipe said today’s official implementation of the Eco-bag ordinance aims to regulate the distribution of single-use plastic carryout bags.
Elipe, chair of the City Council committee on environment, said retail establishments are required to collect a pass-through charge of P1 from customers who would request single-use bags.
“The ordinance was already implemented by Robinsons Mall, one of our partner malls who are willing to adopt these changes,” he said.
Elipe said among those that will implement the P1-charge today are Gaisano, Ororama, SM City supermarket, and Savemore.
With this, Elipe encouraged everyone to minimize the use of cellophane as this is one of the major causes of floods.
Earlier, the City Government entered into a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with SM City, Savemore, Robinsons Mall, Ororama and Gaisano for the unified eco-bag project.
The partnership is aimed at encouraging sound environmental policies and practices, promoting through environmental cooperation and commitments among the establishments.
Elipe said the ordinance hopes to facilitate cooperation between the said establishments in the production, distribution and sale of the eco bags and to help provide livelihood to Typhoon Sendong victims.
The eco bags will be made by Sendong victims at the Calaanan relocation site.
